OKINAWA-CLASS DROPSHIP ENDEAVOR’S RUN

LOW ORBIT, EMPORIA

FEDERATED SUNS

18 APRIL 3150

OPERATION BARBICAN, T-MINUS 13 HOURS

Nadine and Lyric floated next to each other as James took his shift on the radio. Again, Nadine redirected her anxiety into anger at her inability to pace away her excess energy as the two Kuritan officers were brought aboard the DropShip and locked in separate escape pods. She wanted to be there, be part of the action. She also wanted to know more about the chu-sa’s statement that the Seventh Ghost Regiment was not supposed to be here at Emporia. More than that, she wanted to know the truth of the doctor’s statement about the vaccine.

Lyric shook her shoulder, causing Nadine to wobble in space. “You can’t glare anyone or anything into submission. Especially the lack of gravity. You’re making Allard nervous.”

Nadine looked up at the officer, who had returned and taken up a guard position. She saw him eyeing both her and Lyric like they were bombs about to go off, and made the effort to smooth over her face. “I can try.”

“Always tilting at windmills.” Lyric glanced at Leftenant Allard, then put her back to him and made like she was going to whisper in Nadine’s ear. Instead, she placed a gentle kiss on her cheek. “It will be okay. Eventually.”

Nadine sighed. “I hate it when you do that to me.”

“What? Kiss you?”

“No, talk sense. You’re an awesome girlfriend. You know that?”

Lyric flipped upside down. “I try.”

Nadine flipped herself over to match eyes with her. “So, what do we do now?”

“Go back to our pod?”

Nadine gestured at Leftenant Allard. “Not likely.” She raised her voice. “Is it okay if we go back to our pod?”

Allard shook his head, his frown stony. “No. Stay here, where I can see you.”

Nadine groaned.

“Cheer up,” Lyric said. “We can nap until Morse needs us.” She put her hands behind her head and stretched out like she was in a hammock. The faint currents from the air-recirculation system pushed her supine form toward one of the vents. She hooked an arm around a hand pull and closed her eyes.

Nadine didn’t understand how everyone could be so calm. She scowled at Leftenant Allard—who returned the scowl in kind—then turned away. Hooking an arm around one of the hand pulls, Nadine closed her eyes and tried to rest as well.

A thousand years later—or about twenty minutes—Corporal Crispin spoke. “Captain Morse will see Cadets Roux and Hayton in the fighter bay now.”

“Escorted?” Leftenant Allard asked.

Corporal Crispin shrugged.

There were many things Nadine could’ve said to express her thoughts. She said none of them. Straightening, she nodded to Lyric. “We’re on our way. We know how to get there.” Without waiting for a word from either of the bridge crew, she propelled herself out of the bridge and then down the corridor.

She paused at an intersection to see if Allard or Crispin had followed. They hadn’t. That made her grin. Sometimes, it was good to be a pain in the ass.

Lyric stopped by her side. “You know, you don’t have to antagonize everyone on this ship.
